The music gods are smiling upon Denver in November. With Art Brut just leaving town and Mason Jennings, Electric Six, Cage The Elephant and others on their way in, it was Holiday Shores who had the honors on Monday night. Their set was sandwiched between Candy Claws and Evangelicals, but I was only there to listen to Holiday Shores’ set and get a few PBRs from the friendly bartenders at Hi-Dive. Just like Surfer Blood last week, Holiday Shores is a group of young Floridians who had never been to Colorado before their current tour. Sadly they were booked to play at the same time as the Broncos’ huge Monday Night Football game, so there were about 20 people there which makes it hard for everybody. Luckily, the boys from Tallahassee took it all in stride and even dedicated a song to specifically 5% of the audience (one dude).
I’ve already spoken highly of their album Columbus’d The Whim and to my delight they played almost exclusively from it on Monday night. They virtually rebuilt their garage setup on stage, cramming guitars amongst amps, and setting up a makeshift table with a sawhorse and a piece of plywood to hold their keyboards and various effects machines. They sounded incredibly true to the lo-fi album recording, which should come as no surprise, but as with most live shows of the sort, having an actual kick drum thumping your chest cavity makes you want to dance just a little bit more. If you’re a fan of their recorded stuff, you should definitely check them out when they come to your town.
