As with all well laid plans, come festival time one can probably shove them up one’s well laid ass. That being case, we’re not going to guarantee we’ll see any of these bands at Monolith. Inevitably, there will be another band that catches our ears, or a thirty-fifth cheeseburger that catches our taste buds, that will prevent us from seeing a few of the bands we’re really interested in. However, as of right now, this is what our lineup is looking like.
SATURDAY
The Antlers
1:30 - WOXY.com Stage
http://www.myspace.com/theantlers
Their latest release Hospice has quickly found its way into high rotation pretty much anywhere I go. They’ve got a great driving rock sound that I think will translate very well to a live show, especially at the Woxy stage in the bowels of Red Rocks. This show should be a great way to kick off the festival. If I come to tears before 2:30 it will be because of…
(Probably) Can’t Miss Song #1: Sylvia
Speakeasy Tiger
2:00 – SoCo Stage
http://thepublic.speakeasytiger.com/
The first Denver-based act I plan on lending my ears to (yes, I’m going to skip Gregory Alan Isakov). Their tunes are poppy and catchy, but not too overbearing. From what I hear, they didn’t kill it at the Monolith preview show last week, so hopefully they can crank it up for the audience at Red Rocks.
(Probably) Can’t Miss Song #2: Speak Long, Dream On (7:10 into clip)
Thao With The Get Down Stay Down
2:30 – esurance Stage
http://thaomusic.com/
2:30 is late enough in the day to head over to the main stage. I’m going to try to conserve my energy and go up and down the stairs 232 times or less over the course of the weekend. I haven’t heard much from Thao and friends, so I’m excited to sit through a full set and enjoy some her Feist-y music. They look like they’ll be a lot of fun.
(Probably) Can’t Miss Song #3: Beat (Health, Life, and Fire)
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros
3:00 - SoCo Stage
http://edwardsharpeandthemagneticzeros.com/
I know nothing about these guys other than the fact that if I don’t see them I get a point on my hipster license. This will be the first tough call of the weekend as These United States will be showing off some of their new material at the WOXY.com stage at the same time. I’ve seen TUS several times, so I’ll check out E. Sharpe and if he’s not immediately blowing my hair back, I’ll head downstairs. If this clip is any indication, looks like a good show:
Frightened Rabbit
3:30 – esurance Stage
http://www.myspace.com/frightenedrabbit
Sad bastard music from Scotland? Yes, please! Another band that I don’t know much about but am very interested in getting to know better. Here they are playing for a bunch of kindergarteners:
The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart
4:00 – SoCo Stage
http://www.thepainsofbeingpureatheart.com/
Yes, it’ll probably be tough for me to break away, but I’m going to attempt to leave Frightened Rabbit early to go check out The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. I’ve become a big fan of their self-titled album, despite it’s emo-80’s feel. For some reason their Cure-meets-The-Smiths sound appeals to me even though I’m not a huge fan of The Cure or The Smiths. Strange. Anyway, I’ll go rub shoulders with the emo kids for awhile and hope they play…
(Probably) Can’t Miss Song #4: Come Saturday

Doom
7:00 – SoCo Stage
http://www.myspace.com/mfdoom
A three hour break?! Really?! Yes, really. I’m going to need some food and I’m honestly not too excited about OK GO, M. Ward, or Cymbals Eat Guitars. With Doom, however, we get to check out one of the country’s most enigmatic emcees. Will he be on his game? Will we see his face? Will he even show up? Who knows…
Hollywood Holt
7:40 – Radius Stage
http://www.myspace.com/holtgoestohollywood
I’ll stick with the hip-hop theme and check out Hollywood Holt. Yeah, I’m planning on skipping Girl Talk for two reasons: 1. He’s overrated. 2. Everyone will be there. Okay, I’ll check him out, but not before spending a good 40 minutes with Hollywood and Mano. I mean really… how much fun does this look like?
Of Montreal
8:45 – SoCo Stage
http://www.ofmontreal.net/
How much cross-dressing, psycho-twee, indie-fuzz-pop can my ears and eyes take in one sitting? We’ll find out on Saturday.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
9:30 – esurance Stage
http://www.yeahyeahyeahs.com/
I desparately want the YYYs to make a believer out of me. I’ve listened and listened and just can’t seem to get over the hump with them. Maybe an evening with them at Red Rocks will sway me. Couldn’t hurt if they play…
(Probably) Can’t Miss Song #5: Y Control

Also, you shan't miss These United States 3:30 at the WOXY stage!!! I said the word "shan't" so it makes the consequences more dire if you miss it!
